BRRRRR that was a cold one last week! December is here and it looks like things are moving in a positive direction for this coming week. With melting snow, students do get wet playing outside. Having an extra set of socks, pants/shirt etc in the backpack is always helpful!

Last week I mentioned that Theo, one of our grade 5 students was going for a world record for the longest throw distance of a Frisbee (flying disc) by a student in a wheelchair. We are so excited to share that the longest throw he made out of his 15 attempts was 27 feet! That’s awesome – way to go Theo! Huge thanks also to his friend James who retrieved all those Frisbees and who had been helping Theo practice leading up to the big day. We do believe that the cheering from staff, his family and of course our grade 5’s with their encouraging signs really helped Theo achieve this distance. Several media outlets were on site to capture the excitement. See below for various media stories.

Tomorrow, Theo will receive his official World Disc Federation record presented by Frisbee Rob. We anticipate that Global News will be at CPS to share in this milestone event for Theo. This is happening the same week that we recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

Other important dates of significance include:

December – Universal Human Rights Month

December 2 - International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

December 4 -  International Volunteer Day

December 6 - National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

This week is a special week for Ms. Carroll’s grade 5 class who are the first of the four classes to attend Healthy Living School at the Rocky Ridge YMCA. Trips such as this are not possible without the tremendous financial support of our school council and parent volunteers. Currently, Ms. Wilson’s class, who attend next week, has a shortage of volunteers. We are looking for parents who might be able to support this trip even if your child is not in this class or in grade 5. If you have a current, valid police security clearance on file and you could support us for a day, we would certainly appreciate it. Please connect with me via email at cledwards@cbe.ab.ca to discuss availability and slots needing to be filled.

And while on this week long learning opportunity, students will have a chance to stuff backpacks for kids in need. We are still accepting donations of new school supplies such as paper, backpacks, pencils, crayons/markers etc. Donations can be dropped off in the box outside the front office.

School Council would like to remind CPS families that our Giving Tree event is now up and running. Thank you to those families who have already filled a donation slot. Please click on the link below if you would like to donate.

Our elves have checked their stock and noticed they are in need of some wrapping paper, tags, and holiday gift bags. Anyone willing to donate any of these items, please feel free to drop them off to our wonderful CPS office staff who will ensure the stuff makes its way to our elves. All gift wrap donations need to be dropped off no later than Thursday December 5th! Our elves have a lot of work ahead!

Ms. Rickard, our music teacher has been a super busy elf herself. This week, she and Ms. Baniak took our choir children to visit Sage Hill Retirement Home. It is so great to be a part of lifting spirits for others during this time of year. It was a heartwarming experience for all. And speaking of time of year, it is time once again for our Winter Celebration. A message was sent to families last week regarding the event which will take place Thursday December 12 for two shows: afternoon show from 1:30-2:30 and the evening performance from 6:30-7:30. In both shows, the Kindergarten to grade 2 students will be presenting as well as the grade 3-5 choir. Due to limited seating, we do invite anyone who is able to attend the afternoon performance to consider this option. Further information about the concert can be found through this link: https://forms.office.com/r/mfrARMBQGC. This form is your way of requesting tickets for the evening performance. Please complete the form by December 8, 2024. If you have additional questions, please contact Alison Bates-Church at albates@cbe.ab.ca.

We are so pleased to have our grade 5 leadership club running this year. They will be assisting with popcorn organization and distribution for Popcorn Day on Thursday. They are now also in charge of determining our Fashion Fridays. They have chosen this Fashion Friday to be 'wear blue', in honour of Theo whose favourite colour is blue.
