Did you know that Alberta celebrates Bullying Awareness Week this coming week from November 18-22? In previous years, our school development plan has focused on creating a sense of belonging for our students and helping them recognize that they are part of the CPS community as well as the broader community of Calgary. Conversations about building strong, positive relationships have been the focus. Building on that work, we are now focusing on the language we use when interacting with others, including specific vocabulary that builds positive relationships. Bullying is a word that is often used in today’s society by both children and adults, sometimes erroneously, as the line between conflict and bullying has become blurred. By definition, bullying is: The repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can be physical, verbal or psychological. It can happen face-to-face or online. Anti-Bullying Alliance Conflicts between children are a normal part of growing up. School is a great place to learn problem solving skills and how to collaborate and negotiate to meet our needs. As teachers and administrators we deal with conflicts daily and support our students through problem solving conversations. What is different between conflict and bullying is the ‘repeated and targeted’ nature of the behaviour in a bullying situation. At CPS we take all matters of conflict and bullying seriously. If your child ever expresses concern about bullying, please reach out to your child’s teacher as well as school administration. Additionally, there are a number of resources available to families to support ongoing conversations in the home as well. This week we also celebrate/honour November 20 as National Child Day as well as Transgender Remembrance Day and November 20-26 as Canadian History Week. As part of our work towards building community, we are excited for our grade 5 students who will be heading off to 'Healthy Living School' as part of their Campus Calgary/Open Minds week of offsite learning at the Rocky Ridge YMCA. While at the site, students will be stuffing backpacks for students in need. CPS is currently accepting donations of new backpacks, crayons, pencils/pens and markers as well as other highly used school supplies. Donations can be dropped off in the donation bin by the office from now until November 30. Speaking of donations, we are in our last full week to fill the bins for Stan’s Food Drive in honour of our veterans. Any non-perishable food items as well as personal hygiene items families can donate are greatly appreciated. In honour of National Child Day this week, Fashion Friday will be dress in your favourite childhood outfit/colours! School Council will be hosting their monthly meeting this Wednesday November 20 from 6:30-8:00 in a hybrid format – both in-person and online. Any parent/guardian with a child at CPS is a member of council. Please join us to hear about the amazing things council does in support of our school, information that will be shared by grade 3 teachers as well administration sharing our new three year school development plan.
