Another beautiful autumn weekend! We have so much to be thankful for including our amazing fall colours! Besides Thanksgiving, celebrated Monday October 14, other dates of significance this week include:

  • Sukkot – October 16-23
  • Secret Path Week – October 17-22
  • Persons Day – October 18

We are looking forward to our upcoming parent-teacher conferences being held the evening of Thursday October 24 from 4:30-8:00 pm and during the day Friday October 25 from 8:30 am -1:30 pm. These conferences are an important part of the CBE reporting process which includes conferences twice a year in fall and spring and two formal report cards in January and June. We encourage all families to book a time to connect with their child’s teacher to share in the learning achievements to date. Families will be able to book conferences through “My CBE Conferences” beginning at 8:00 am Thursday. You will receive an email message from the school containing details on how to sign up.

In addition to our conferences, we will also be hosting our Scholastic Book Fair. Ms. Kruger and her team of volunteers are eagerly planning the showcasing of some fantastic books and student posters/pens etc. The Scholastic Book Fair empowers our students to choose books they love, and with so many options, they’re sure to find themselves in the pages. Students will have opportunity to peruse the book fair prior to conferences however purchases can only be made Thursday evening and Friday during the day during conferences.

Our first popcorn day was a success! This is a reminder to see previous messages sent from CPS School Council regarding fun lunch and popcorn sign up via Healthy Hunger. The next fun lunch is Thursday October 24.

This past Friday students participated in our second fire drill practice. For safety, we continue to encourage all students to have proper fitting indoor shoes which include laces tied up. We have one fire drill and one lockdown practice to be completed prior to winter break as part of our CBE safety protocols.

Speaking of safety, our grade 3 students have been provided information by the City of Calgary. The activity book aims to support children in learning about street safety. Please visit this City of Calgary website for more information. Additionally, as part of the city's 'Mobility Education Toolkit', a flatsheet has been produced to assist parents in having conversations related to safety with their children. Please see attached.

In keeping with these messages, we urge all families to continue to practice and model safe pedestrian and vehicle movement around our school including accommodating for yellow school busses.

Lifetouch Photography was in our school last week to take individual photos. If your child was absent or you wish to have photos retaking, our photo retake day is Tuesday November 5. This is also the day that group/classroom photos will occur.

Secret Path Week runs from October 17-22, dates that mark the passing of both legendary Canadian singer Gord Downie lead singer for the Tragically Hip and residential school student Chanie Wenjack. Gord took up the movement to action after learning about Chanie, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy who died after escaping residential school who was attempting to reach his family 600km away. The hope of honouring Chanie was to ‘create a pathway on the journey towards reconciliation’. You can learn more about this story at https://downiewenjack.ca/our-work/secret-path-week/ . In honour of this work, Fashion Friday this week will be ‘wear purple’.

Have a great week!
