Week at a Glance ~ November 2-6
|
November has arrived and with it a new time zone shift! As the province adopts year-round daylight savings time, this means that sunrise will occur later in the morning. As a result, we would like to remind families that as the mornings are darker, safety in and around our school will be paramount. Please ensure students are aware of safe street crossing procedures at crosswalks only and the importance of being ‘seen’ by drivers before moving into the street. This is a reminder that playground zones remain in effect beginning at 7:30 am. This will be a new experience for everyone, and we appreciate your attention to safety for sake of all students. Picture re-take day is this Wednesday November 4. If you wish your child to have re-takes, please have them dressed accordingly and remind them that morning that they should head to the gym for retakes when called. Our grade 2 students are headed to Telus Spark on Tuesday. This is a reminder that all field trip fees need to be paid through your child’s MyCBE account. Similarly, if your child has already participated in a field trip or in-class presentation, those fees are now overdue. Please log into your MyCBE account to pay these outstanding fees. Speaking of presentations, we were gifted an hour-long presentation from Frisbee Rob last Friday due to the generosity of Charlesglen Toyota, his sponsor. Rob shared not only shared some of his amazing frisbee skills, but he also imparted some great words of advice to our young learners. Through his messaging, Rob spoke about his challenges as a child and how he embarked on many ‘sports’ journeys before he found his ‘thing’ – frisbee. After realizing his interest, Rob shared that the most important part of becoming a world record holder was that practice makes better and that challenging oneself is the way to self-improvement. He emphasized to students the importance of focusing on what you can/should do “Catch the frisbee” rather than what you can’t/shouldn’t do - “Don’t drop the frisbee”. This inspirational presentation has many connections to the work we are already undertaking in our school related to our Bison Project and our desire to instill in children the ability to ‘face their storm’. Consider using this language when talking with your children about school and their daily celebrations and struggles. This will help students connect that these life lessons will help them successfully navigate new learning opportunities. Thank you to the CPS School Council and Parent Association who hosted a fantastic Halloween Dance last Thursday! We had a great turnout and plenty of interesting costumes! We appreciate that events such as this only occur because of a dedicated group of volunteers; thank you to everyone who helped set up, take down and support the event. Thank you also to the volunteers who supported the distribution of chips and apples! What a busy time it was last week! Speaking of CPS School Council, the November meeting will be held this Wednesday November 4 from 6:30-8:00 pm. Parents/guardians are welcome to join in-person or online using the link below: Microsoft Teams meeting Join: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/2944152102005011?p=qNYVecWsncZuaAGxZh As we move into November, CPS is once again proud to be sponsoring Stan’s Food Drive for the Veteran’s Food Bank. Stan McPhail was a World War II veteran who passed away several years ago. Before his passing, he celebrated his 95th birthday with us. Each year since then we have participated in the Veteran’s Association Food Drive in Stan’s honour. Throughout the month of November, we are collecting non-perishable food items as well as household supplies most needed by the food bank. If everyone donated just 1 item, we have over 500 items to pass along. Items requested include: Garbage Bags, XL, L, M, S Tinfoil/Aluminum Foil Gluten-Free Products Canned Oysters Salad Dressing November 26 (evening) and November 27 (day) CPS will be hosting our fall parent-teacher conferences.
