Week at a Glance ~ October 26-30

Friday brought an indication of things to come in terms of weather. Families are reminded that students will be outside unless it is pouring rain or if the temperature dips below minus 20 degrees Celsius (including with the windchill). When we have inclement weather, students will be encouraged to enter through the closest door. Students are reminded to dress for the weather including having warm, waterproof boots, snow pants, winter jacket, hats and mitts/gloves. As many students have similar items, labelling your child’s belongings is strongly encouraged. Additionally, having a change of clothes, including extra socks in your child’s backpack is also helpful. We have plenty of jackets and hoodies in our 'lost but not yet found' and students are encouraged to take a peek for missing items as they pass by it on their way to phys. ed. For families who celebrate Halloween, students are invited to wear their costumes this Thursday as part of Fashion Thursday which aligns with the CPS School Council Halloween Dance being hosted Thursday evening. If your child chooses to wear a costume, please ensure it is age appropriate and inclusive. Please avoid having students wear masks that make it difficult to see and/or breathe and please leave all accessories such as wands and swords at home as these often go missing at school. Due to Calgary Board of Education nutrition policies, please avoid sending your child to school with food for the class. We do not host class parties – it is a regular school day focused on curriculum learning. We are excited to have a familiar guest return to Citadel Park School. World Record Holder Frisbee Rob will be joining us on Friday morning for a whole-school assembly. His presentation will focus on the importance of perseverance and resilience which aligns with our SDP goals regarding vocabulary development in the area of well-being. The assembly will take place from 9:30–10:30 a.m and parents are invited to join. As this is a PM Kindergarten Friday, AM Kindergarten students are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian. One of Frisbee Rob's sponsors, Charlesglen Toyota, is funding this exciting opportunity for our students. This week students in grades 1-5 will be bringing home an envelope with the results of the literacy and numeracy provincial screener assessments that students completed in September. A separate message from the CBE will be sent to families tomorrow explaining these screener assessments. In an effort to reduce costs, we have asked that families return these envelopes as students in K-3 will write these assessments again in January. Should you have any follow up questions regarding the information sent home, please contact your child’s teacher. Our grade 2 and 5 students enjoyed in-class presentations last week. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with our grade 1’s. Tomorrow, our grade 3 students are headed to Telus Spark. While our CPS School Council has been generous in their financial support of extracurricular activities, not all costs for such activities can be covered by council. As a result, we need to charge families on-site/off-site activity fees. Reviewing fees data, we notice that a significant number of families have not yet paid their activity fees. As we must pay the presenter/service provider on the day of the activity, this puts the school in a deficit budget having to cover unpaid fees. We strongly encourage all families to log into their MyCBE account to view currently posted fees which include noon supervision, yellow school bus transportation as well as student activities fees and school supplies fees. Paying fees early will avoid unpaid fees moving to collections. If your family is experiencing financial hardship, please contact me at cledwards@cbe.ab.ca so that we may discuss options.
