Week at a Glance ~ October 16-20

Another beautiful fall weekend! Hopefully everyone was able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine!

This past week we did experience some inclement weather and we know there is more to come. We would like to take this opportunity to remind families that students are able to enter the building early in the morning only if it is raining or if the temperature is below -20 degrees Celsius. On these mornings, there is supervision at all doors and students are encouraged to enter through the closest door. In the case of inclement weather throughout the day, the same procedures are followed for recess and lunch. All students are encouraged to dress for the weather. It can be extremely cold and/or windy on our school grounds, particularly at the back of the school and on the playground. Living in our Canadian climate where we celebrate 4 seasons, we do encourage all students to be outside, and even do physical education classes outside in all types of weather. If your child is missing a coat, please have them check the lost and found.

Given the global movement away from single use plastics, the lunchroom program at Citadel Park School is having difficulty keeping up with the demand by students for forks, spoons etc. If you are sending your child to school with a food item that requires a fork or a spoon, please be sure to include these items in their lunch kit. Occasionally we have had to supply students with utensils from our staff room and these are also being quickly depleted. If you have donations of metal forks, knives or spoons that are still in good, usable condition for our staff room, they can be dropped off anytime in the school office.

This Friday is a non-instructional day which means no school for students. Staff will be analyzing data and solidifying our school development goals for the school year. We hope that the weather remains nice so we can continue learning on the land connecting our work to the areas of well-being and a sense of belonging.

A message from CPS SChool Council and Parent Association will be forthcoming later today. The message will include information regarding:

  • Apple pick up
  • Halloween Dance
  • Fun Lunch

Halloween is just around the corner and we wanted to remind families that we are unable to hand out treats/food. Please do not send your child to school with any Halloween candy or food for distribution. Students are able to dress in costume and should refrain from wearing costumes that inhibit movement, include blood/gore or weapons or include masks that make it difficult to see. Costumes are not required and students will be engaged in regular learning opportunities throughout the day. Following Halloween it is important to limit the amount of candy that students are bringing to school. We thank you for your understanding.

Did you know that October Is National Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Awareness Month? ADHD is a medical condition that affects how the brain works and can have significant impacts on executive function skills which include, organization, attention, planning etc. People with ADHD may experience challenges with inattention, hyperactivity or impulsivity. ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in Canada, affecting 4-6% of adults and 5-7% of children, or approximately 1.8 million Canadians. If you are looking for information related to ADHD, the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada (CADDAC) has some useful information.

Have a great week!
