Week at a Glance ~ September 28 to October 2

October begins this week and the weather is certainly feeling like fall! October 1st is also picture day at CPS! Please mark your calendars as there is no school Wednesday September 30 due to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Thank you to the families who joined us for our Meet the Teacher event last Thursday. It was great to see so many smiling faces and students excited to show you the places they move through throughout the day.

We would also like to thank the families of grade 2 students who joined us for our Orange Shirt Day assembly last Wednesday. The students really enjoy having you in the audience and were so excited to share their work with you…twice!

We are very excited about the Terry Fox School Run that will take place at school tomorrow. We'd love your support! Every dollar raised helps continue Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope and supports cancer research across Canada. Let’s show what our school community can do when we come together! You can donate at https://schools.terryfox.ca/CitadelParkSchoolCalgary. This donation link will remain open until Thanksgiving. Our run will take place from 11:00-11:40 am after our assembly. We wish to thank the volunteers who will help us monitor the course and cheer on our runners!

This week we will wrap up the provincial assessments we have been completing with students in grades 1-5 in both literacy and numeracy. Having had the privilege of marking some of these screeners, I noticed that our students are lagging in some simple computational skills. I would note that while we work at school to teach number concepts and processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as students move through the grades, the speed with which they can compute significantly impacts their math learning. The impact of efficient calculation was evident in part of the numeracy screeners we recently completed and got me thinking about when parents ask how they can support their children at home. If you are looking to support your child’s math learning, practicing with flash cards or taking any opportunity such as on the walk to school to ask them a few math facts makes the task of learning basic facts less onerous. Card games, dice games and board games are all great ways of practicing math basic fact skills.Any time we can move from ‘counting’ to rote recall of facts, it frees up cognitive capacity to address some of the more complex work required in math tasks.

Families registered for yellow school bus transportation recently received confirmation emails. Registered families who have decided not to use bus service can cancel their registration in MyCBE with no financial impact by Wednesday September 30. If you do not cancel by this deadline, fees will continue to be charged until a cancellation is received, regardless of actual usage. Retro-active fee refunds will not be provided. Transportation fees will be loaded into MyCBE later in October.
